John J. Driscoll Says Firm Is Reviewing Mirena IUD Claims
The Driscoll Firm, LLC, says it is evaluating potential injury claims involving the Mirena intrauterine device (IUD), including injuries that may have resulted from perforation of the uterus.
St. Louis, MO (Vocus/PRWEB) January 12, 2013 – St. Louis defective medical products lawyer John J. Driscoll announced today that his law firm is taking inquiries and reviewing potential injury claims arising from the Mirena intrauterine device (IUD).
“The issues we are evaluating are whether a defect in this device has caused serious physical and emotional injuries in female patients, including those involving sudden migration of the device from the implant site, and whether the manufacturer failed to properly warn patients about the risks of these injuries,” Driscoll said.
“We urge any woman who believes she has suffered harm resulting from the Mirena IUD to get legal assistance right away in order to ensure her rights are protected,” the attorney added.
The Driscoll Firm, LLC, is a nationally recognized personal injury firm that focuses on complex civil litigation in areas that include dangerous pharmaceuticals and defective medical products.
Driscoll said his firm has received numerous inquiries concerning the Mirena IUD, which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describes as a “small, flexible hormone-releasing device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy.”
The FDA approved the Mirena IUD (also called a levonorgestrel intrauterine system) as a contraceptive in 2000 and for treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding among IUD users in 2009. It is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., of New Jersey.
However, according to the Adverse Events database, the FDA has received 45,969 adverse event reports involving Mirena through June 2012.
According to the FDA, perforation of the uterine wall or cervix and embedment of the device in the uterine wall are among “the most serious adverse reactions” that have been reported by patients using the Mirena IUD.
Based on the data compiled by Adverse Events, nearly half of the adverse event reports by Mirena users (45 percent) have involved device expulsion or dislocation.
The FDA says additional adverse reactions among Mirena IUD users include: Ectopic pregnancy (the fertilized egg grows outside the uterus), intrauterine pregnancy (a pregnancy with Mirena in place), group A streptococcal sepsis, pelvic inflammatory disease, uterine bleeding / spotting at irregular intervals, headaches, ovarian cysts, vaginitis, pain during menstruation (dysmenorrhea), pelvic pain and breast tenderness.
Driscoll said that those interested in learning more about the Mirena IUD should contact The Driscoll Firm, LLC, by calling 314-932-3232.
