GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, both products manufactured by Fresenius and used in kidney dialysis procedures, have been linked to serious blood irregularity side effects. The numerous product liability lawsuits filed against the manufacturer were recently consolidated in Multidistrict Litigation in Massachusetts to resolve common questions of fact.
Metabolic Alkalosis Injuries Being Investigated
Lawsuits filed against manufacturer Fresenius and now part of the MDL (In Re: Fresenius GranuFlo/NaturaLyte Dialystate Products Liability Litigation) under the Honorable Douglas P. Woodlock in the District Court of Massachusetts generally allege injuries or deaths caused by the use of GranuFlo Acid Concentrate (GranuFlo) and NaturaLyte Liquid Acid Concentrate (NaturaLyte) during hemodialysis – the most common method used to treat advanced and permanent kidney failure. Specifically, plaintiffs allege that the products can lead to increased bicarbonate levels in kidney dialysis patients and cause a condition known as metabolic alkalosis, which is a blood irregularity that can result in serious side effects.
GranuFlo / NaturaLyte Side Effects
GranuFlo and NaturaLyte side effects can be life threatening. Metabolic alkalosis can lead to heart attack, hypotension, cardiac arrhythmia, hypoxemia and more.
- Heart attack. A heart attack can occur when the blood flow to the heart is insufficient; death or long-term injury and debilitation can result.
- Hypotension. Hypotension is low blood pressure, which can result in failure of the heart, lungs, brain and other parts of the body to receive an adequate supply of blood.
- Cardiac Arrhythmia. Cardiac arrhythmia is an irregular heart rate – either too slow (bradycardia) or too fast (tachycardia) — that can be life threatening if not treated immediately.
- Hypoxemia. Hypoxemia, or low blood oxygen, can potentially lead to fatal pulmonary edema (excess fluid in the lungs) in severe or prolonged cases.
