Topamax, the epilepsy and migraine prevention medication manufactured by Johnson & Johnson (J&J), has long been linked to birth defects affecting the heart, lungs and limbs. A new European study recently reported that there also may be is a significant relationship between the drug and brain and genital defects as well.
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Study
A new study published in the March 2013 edition of the medical journal Acta Neurologica Scandinavica provides further medical research on the link between Topamax and birth defects. The report, authored by a group of Australian doctors, found that pregnant women who used Topamax had a greater risk of delivering a child with birth defects affecting the brain and genitals than those who did not use the drug. Unfortunately, these birth defects are not the only Topamax side effects that can affect a newborn’s physical condition – as well as a parent’s emotional condition.
Topamax Side Effects
Topamax, generically known as topiramate and manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of J&J), has been linked with numerous side effects including:
- Cleft lip or palate
- Heart defects
- Limb malformations
- Lung defects
- Spina bifida
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to Topamax users in March of 2011 that stated that pregnant women who were prescribed the drug had over a 20% likelihood of their children being born with oral cleft defects. Numerous lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers for failing to warn users about these known risks.
