New research shows that women who use Merck & Company’s NuvaRing contraceptive device and suffer from migraine headaches may have an even higher risk of suffering from a potentially deadly blood clot.
More Bad News For NuvaRing Users
NuvaRing, Merck & Company’s transparent plastic contraceptive device which is inserted in the vagina and releases hormones into the body to prevent pregnancy, has long been linked to serious side effects such as blood clots, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), heart attack, stroke and death.
Now there’s more bad news for NuvaRing users. According to the American Academy of Neurology, researchers identified over 145,000 women who used forms of birth control containing estrogen and progestin (such as NuvaRing, Yaz and Yasmin) and suffered from migraines. They concluded that these women had, “an elevated risk for blood clot complications like deep vein thrombosis compared to those who didn’t use the contraceptives.”
The American Academy of Neurology says that more research is still needed to fully understand the relationships between these drugs, migraines and injury. In the meantime, more and more NuvaRing lawsuits are being filed by women who have already suffered serious NuvaRing side effects.
NuvaRing Injury Lawsuits
Thousands of injuries and dozens of deaths have been associated with NuvaRing use, and nearly 1,000 lawsuits have been filed against Merck & Co. and its subsidiary, Organon Pharmaceuticals, alleging that NuvaRing use can double a woman’s risk of potentially fatal blood clots and serious thrombotic incidents as compared with other contraceptives.
