The manufacturers of NuvaRing, the once-a-month vaginal birth control ring that is aggressively being marketed as a better option than traditional birth control methods, face over 1,000 lawsuits by women who claim that they have suffered serious NuvaRing side effects. A widower who claims that his wife died of a pulmonary embolism after using NuvaRing has filed one of the latest lawsuits. She was only 31 years old.
NuvaRing’s Tragic Consequences
Several new NuvaRing injury lawsuits have been filed recently in the Southern District of Illinois – separate from where the current multidistrict litigation is located in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. One of those lawsuits involved tragic NuvaRing consequences.
According to the Madison St. Clair Record, Robert Howell alleges that his 31-year-old wife suffered a massive pulmonary embolism and died in July 2011 as a proximate and direct result of using NuvaRing. His lawsuit against the manufacturers – Organon USA Inc., N.V. Organon, Schering Corp., Merck & Co., Inc. and Merck Sharp & Dohme – alleges negligence, strict products liability, breach of express and implied warranties and others.
NuvaRing Side Effects
NuvaRing delivers hormones continuously and directly into the bloodstream, rather than intermittently through the digestive system as with birth control pills. NuvaRing’s impact on a woman’s body is dramatic, and as the case above highlights, potentially lethal. It is estimated that approximately 50 women have died from NuvaRing side effects so far. Those side effects include:
- Blood clots
- Pulmonary Embolism (blood clots in the lung(s))
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- Heart attack
- Stroke.
