NuvaRing

The Driscoll Firm, LLC, is accepting cases of serious venous thrombotic events causing injuries such as pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lung(s) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) as well as death from blood clot related stroke, heart attack or pulmonary embolism resulting from the use of the NuvaRing contraceptive device for women.

NuvaRing is a flexible, transparent plastic ring that is inserted in the vagina and releases hormones into the body to prevent pregnancy. It requires a doctor’s prescription. It is the only vaginal hormonal contraceptive available in the U.S.

Medical research indicates NuvaRing may cause serious blood clots, which can lead to heart attacks, stroke or death. According to a CBS News report, about 40 women have died using NuvaRing. More than 900 NuvaRing injury lawsuits have been filed against Merck and Organon, the manufacturers of the device.

Women who use NuvaRing face a risk of:

  • Blood clots
  • Pulmonary Embolism (blood clots in the lung(s))
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Death caused by blood clot (pulmonary embolism, stroke or heart attack)

NuvaRing Death Alleged in New Jersey

NuvaRing is about the size of a silver dollar. The ring is inserted manually into the vagina and removed after three weeks – allowing menstruation to occur — and a new ring is inserted. It works by releasing a continuous dose of hormones into the body, unlike the fluctuating doses that occur with birth control pills.

NuvaRing contains the same hormones as so-called “third generation” birth control pills. The FDA has found that third generation contraceptives can double a woman’s risk of blood clots and serious thrombotic incidents as compared with other contraceptives. Blood clots can lead to serious – and potentially lethal – complications.

A tragic case in point: a 32-year-old New Jersey mother of two using NuvaRing died of a sudden blood clot that migrated from her pelvic area to her lungs while her children and husband looked on helplessly, according to news reports.

NuvaRing has been heavily promoted – especially to young women – as a “first-of-its-kind contraceptive” in print ads proclaiming “Let Freedom Ring,” Facebook ads, and product placements on popular TV shows. Reported side effects include headache, nausea, vaginitis, and thick vaginal discharge. There also have been reports of improper insertion, urinary tract infections and irritation during sexual intercourse. These side effects can be relatively minor and treatable.

More alarming is a BMJ study that found women who use NuvaRing have a greater risk of venous thrombosis than women using other contraceptives. The World Health Organization has recommended that the guidelines and warnings applicable to oral contraceptives should extend to NuvaRing.

NuvaRing is not recommended for women:

  • With a history of cardiac problems, high blood pressure or blood clots:
  • Who are pregnant, might become pregnant or recently gave birth;
  • Who have breast cancer;
  • Who are over 35 and smoke cigarettes.
