Benefits and Risks of Nuvaring
Across the United States, fears are rising over the risk of blood clots and serious injury to women using NuvaRing vaginal birth control.
Some NuvaRing users – up to 40 worldwide, by one count – have died.
As a result, NuvaRing injury lawsuits are skyrocketing, and groups like Public Citizen are demanding an immediate FDA NuvaRing recall.

NuvaRing Effectiveness and Dangers
NuvaRing is a flexible plastic ring inserted once a month into the vagina. It releases a low-dose combination of the female hormones progestin and estrogen directly into the bloodstream.
When NuvaRing was introduced to the United States in 2002, it arrived with a multi-media marketing blitz worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster. Its major benefit – promoted especially to younger women – was its easy, once-a-month application, unlike birth control pills that must be taken daily.
Soon a grimmer picture emerged.
A Danish study found a 90 percent higher risk of women suffering blood clots from NuvaRing use. Another study found that women who use NuvaRing and similar devices are up to three times more likely to suffer heart attacks or strokes compared to women using other types of hormonal birth control.
A 32 year old New Jersey mother of two using NuvaRing died of a blood clot that migrated from her pelvic area to her lungs while her children and husband looked on helplessly, according to news reports.
And Marie Claire magazine reported the painful plight of a 26-year-old woman who developed life-threatening blood clots in her leg.
All total, approximately 1,000 reports of adverse NuvaRing side effects have been reported to the FDA, including:
- Deep vein thrombosis (blood clots that form in the deep veins of the legs, pelvis or arms);
- Pulmonary embolisms (blood clots that break off and travel through the blood stream to lodge near the lung);
- Clotting in the blood vessels of the eye (which can cause vision problems);
- Stroke;
- Heart attack;
- Breast cancer;
- Gallbladder disease;
- High blood pressure;
- Death
